Back from ISPCon Fall - Just got caught up

Posted in Internet Industry at 12:50 am by john

ISPCon was great last week in Santa Clara, and it was nice to see some familiar faces like Peter from Rad-Info, Jack Brandt from Register.com, Jon Price, and many others in the CEO session. I also made some new friends. There were some new faces in CEO, and I came away (as always) with new ideas and new perspectives on our industry. Grid Computing, 3tera’s utility hosting software product, geographically distributed backup technologies (I am sooo implementing this and selling it to customers), new asterisk management software (asterisk is an open-source PBX phone system that we use at Delaware.Net), better backup software, better routers, and much, much more. I have a ton of notes and new opportunities from the show.

I had the privilege of helping out with four sessions at this year’s conference. Ecommerce, Software as a Service (SAAS), Web Development Business, and the CEO session. The CEO session ran from 6pm until 1am with free booze and dinner that was sponsored by Jack Brandt of Register.com (thanks, Jack). There are a lot of ISP companies that don’t offer web development and ecommerce like we do, so I am happy to help those that need it. Even if it is just with advice. It was at the CEO session that I told folks that ISP now stands for “Indispensible Solver of Problems”, which got some laughs. It really does seem to be the common thread that binds the diversity that was at the show. I still love this show.

All of the sessions were videotaped this year, so it will be neat to see how those came out. When the videos get posted, I will link to them.

While at ISPCon, I had an idea for ECommerce that I think is somewhat new and different, and it’s an idea that we are going to integrate into our upcoming ecommerce server that we are calling “Commerce Engine”. I bounced the idea off of a couple of industry folks and I got some really positive reactions. I can’t say more about this yet, but watch the Delaware.Net web site as we are redesigning it and gearing up for this new product launch.

Thanks John for the nice comments. It was good to see you too. Your sessions seem to improve with age as your business matures as well. Seems you can’t say the experience doesn’t help I’m sure. I really got a lot out of this fall’s show as well… There is alway something new to learn from our peers, and great conference sessions as well… As for the food and beer, well, I hope to be able to do that more often going forward. I’m looking forward to hearing about your Cart and Commerce Engine project. You know my thoughts on where you should be going with it. Heck, wasn’t it WebSitePros who recently purchased 1shoppingcart.com for 12.5 million dollars.

Commerce is definitely one of our top 5 products, but CRM is catching up. For 2007, we are ramping up the commerce engine to do something that no one else in the marketplace is doing. It is going to be pretty wild. We are hard at work on upgrading our systems so that resellers will be able to skin our stores in an entirely new way as well, making it easier to design and sell stores. The BIG news will come out in January if all goes on schedule. Our new programmers are really awesome so I know we can get it done. Things that took us months before to get done are now taking hours. I can’t keep a secret forever, so you will see it soon.
