A few months ago, I became inspired to improve our office environment. My goals included:
- Open up the space – we knocked down three walls in the office, combining the tech and design areas.
- Bring in more natural light – knocking down the walls allowed more light in from the perimeter offices.
- Get rid of barriers between people – all office desk hutches were disassembled and removed.
- Improve lighting – replace flourecent lights with halogen spotlights and track lighting.
- Improve the colors of the walls – we had the office painted with a warmer color.
- Add more markerboards – we use markerboards a lot, so we got industrial markerboards from www.uwco.net.
- New flooring – I wanted to remove all carpet from the floors, but we settled for having the carpets professionally cleaned.
- Hang examples of our work – we created a wall of work examples that you pass as you walk into our office now.
After accomplishing all of these goals, I stepped back to admire our office space, and to see what else it needed to turn it into a true design studio. The thing that really jumped out at me is that we have collected quite an array of different computer desks over the years. Some were 6 feet wide, some were 5 feet wide, and two were 4 feet wide. All were made of that particle board that I hate. So the next goal became:
- Get new desks.

The City of Harrington, Delaware recently awarded Delaware.Net the contract to rebuild their website. Harrington researched web design companies from around the country. The proposal from another competing municipal website design vendor for the city’s website was over $30,000 and a included a 3-year contract commitment for hosting the site. By contrast, Delaware.Net prepared a strategy for the city to prepare a new website interface, install our proven content management system for cities, a request tracking system, a city Intranet, a new police department website, a mass emailing system, live training, and much more. Delaware.Net saved the city over $15,000 with the project, and was able to offer more features and better support. Read the rest of this entry »

ICON Enterprises (doing business as ‘CivicPlus’) is a company in Kansas that specializes in building municipal websites. My company (Delaware.Net) competes with companies like this from around the country when we bid on municipal website design projects. We lost a couple of prospective new projects to CivicPlus in 2007 when we were in the middle of producing our own Content Management System (CMS) for government websites. But in 2008, we had completed building and testing our CMS system for eGovernment websites, and we have won many municipal projects from around the USA ever since. Our new system is called CivicLogic. In this article, I will explain why our solution is better than some of the other options out there, and how we can help municipalities to migrate to our solution.
Here are some of the differences between us and our competitors;

Since I was a kid, I have fond memories of going to the Delaware beaches. Rehoboth Beach has always been a special place for me. The boardwalk, the shops, restaurants, all of it. It still has that charm that brings a flood of Pennsylvanians and Delawareans to the beach. Rehoboth IS the beach for many folks.

There are many Content Management Systems (CMS) software packages on the market if you want to manage your own website content. Some are very inexpensive or free, and other enterprise CMS suites can cost over $100K. Delaware.Net offers our own system, called Team-Logic. It is neither costly nor free, and it is incredibly powerful but still easy to use. Prices start at $50 per month for the whole system.
There ARE cheaper open source solutions out there, and on the low end you have systems like Drupal, PHPNuke, PostNuke, .netNuke, Joomla, and others. These can be made to work if you have the time and patience, but for the most part they are solutions for non-profits and companies that don’t want to spend a lot on their website design work. I would never recommend them for a growing business that really cares about their website. Especially if they don’t have an in-house IT team. These low-end systems are well suited for a website where it is OK to use design templates for someone that wants to get up and running quickly. But there WILL be problems when using these systems, and like everything else – there is a trade-off.

All homes in the Delaware area are now on Delaware.com!
Today I relaunched my real estate portal at Delaware.com. The portal now includes an expanded real estate search that includes all real estate listings in both the TrendMLS database, and the Offutt database that serves Sussex, County Delaware. The site is updated daily, and has over 60,000 homes. You can search by city, and also by neighborhood to view comparisons of listings that you are interested in. The site also includes virtual tours of properties, and you can search those as well. If you are a licensed Realtor, I can put this technology into a site for you. I will continually add new features to the site to make it the leading real estate site for the state of Delaware.
Free Delaware Business Directory Also Launched
I also launched a local web directory, where you can add your business for free. Simply go to the site and add your web site to the directory for free. If you opt to pay for a premier listing, we have included additional categories that you can be listed under, and there are additional search engine optimization fields that will help to direct traffic to your web site. Premier listings allow a logo, and they show at the top of each category.

I just launched a new real estate portal on Delaware.com. The new real estate search engine for Delaware includes all homes in both Delaware area MLS databases. This allows us to offer a local real estate search that covers ALL of the available homes in Delaware. Each morning, we syndicate over 60,000 homes into our databases. With newer XML-based MLS data being integrated, we will expand this database even further.

2007 was a good year for Delaware.net. We grew 24% overall, and web design project revenue grew 90%. Our staff also grew, and we accomplished most of our goals, including launching new applications. Lots more is coming in 2008, and if you want to hear about some of our plans, click the link.
