How to create PDFs for free
July 24th, 2008A question we hear a lot from customers is “do you know of a free PDF creator program?”. Yes!
A lot of our customers need to create Adobe PDF documents so that they can upload them into their websites (using our content management system), and also so that they can send them as email newsletter attachments.
There are several free PDF generators on the market, but the one that I like to use is called PDFCreator. It is an open-source project on SourceForge.net, and it works great. After you download and install the program, it becomes a print driver for Windows, so that you can create a PDF in any program that you use in Windows. So if you are working on a MS Word document, you click “print” and then “PDFCreator”. The program does the rest. Keep in mind that you won’t have all of the PDF markup and editing features that you would get if you bought the full version of Acrobat (Adobe’s program that creates PDFs).

July 21st, 2008Since I was a kid, I have fond memories of going to the Delaware beaches. Rehoboth Beach has always been a special place for me. The boardwalk, the shops, restaurants, all of it. It still has that charm that brings a flood of Pennsylvanians and Delawareans to the beach. Rehoboth IS the beach for many folks.

Cisco to buy WebEx for $3.2B in cash
March 15th, 2007This is a really strong indication that Cisco is going to target medium sized businesses for VOIP, while also using their Netgear franchise to bundle collaborative online business meetings, voice, and data with turn-key appliances. Pretty exciting stuff. Since WebEx acquired Intranets.com some time ago, it also is a new area of SAAS for Cisco. This appears to be new territory for Cisco, as they have not provided SAAS products in the past. It will be interesting to see how the products and services mesh together over time. It almost reminds me of how EBay bought Skype, and yet Skype doesn’t appear to be integrated into other Ebay offerings yet. Both acquisitions appear to be strategies for bolstering the not-so-sexy business of VOIP by adding sexy applications on top of VOIP.
How to Register the Perfect Domain Name
October 21st, 2006Choosing your domain name for your business is a very important decision, and it is the first step towards your online precense. Once you start to advertise your domain name, your customers will bookmark it. You can and should use the same domain name for both your web site AND your work email. Domain-based email addresses are one of the reasons why most people first register their domain names. Even before you are ready to build a web site, you can begin to use your domain name for email right away. This makes you look way more professional than using the free email address that is given to you by your Internet access provider. Also, if you change ISPs, your will still be able to use your own domain-based email addresses, no matter who your ISP is.
