Magento Ecommerce and 50 Below users are getting sued for patent violations

A loyal customer of mine today told me about a big story that is affecting thousands of ecommerce store owners that are running Magento Ecommerce software (a free, open source solution) and other ecommerce systems. There is a company called Kelora Systems that is suing ecommerce store owners for a patent violation. As you can imagine, this has Magento Ecommerce users scrambling. The patent involves how product searches are done on ecommerce websites.

In one lawsuit filed by Kelora, they are suing large corporations too. These large corporations include; Target Corporation , OfficeMax Inc. , Shopko Stores Operating Co., LLC , Briggs & Stratton Corporation , National Business Furniture, LLC , Rockler Companies, Inc. , 1-800-Flowers.com, Inc. , PC Connection, Inc. , Mason Companies, Inc. , Amazon.com, Inc. , Dell, Inc. , Office Depot, Inc. , Newegg Inc. , Costco Wholesale Corporation , Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P.  and Circuitcity.Com Inc.

Powersports websites that use the 50 Below system are also getting demand letters for $37,000 – $50,000 for patent infringements. 50 Below has responded by telling website owners that “they own their site and they should call an attorney” according to members of the Facebook Group for the Powersports Industry. If that is true, that is a poor way to handle it.
