Been Busy!

We are building website projects for quite a few new clients. We recently won website projects for municipalities in 4 different states, and things are going well. I have several articles that I am finishing up to post to the blog soon.

Here are some of the topics I am working on:
- 50 tips for planning your website project.
- Content strategies for website projects.

Google Changes Search Algorithm – You’ve Been Warned

Your search engine ranking for your website is about to change – again.  And this time, most business owners are going to get a piece of bad news that I have been warning about for a long time now.  This Wednesday, Google launched a new search algorithm, called Caffeine, and they masked this by simultaneously launching a new feature that lets you add a background image to the Google homepage – whoopee. This change to Google is a huge fricken deal.  I’ll explain why after the jump. Continue reading

Google Maps Builder added to CMS Logic

We just launched our new Google Maps builder in our CMS-Logic product.  This allows our customers to build their own Google Maps in their websites, and add pushpins to the map automatically.  We added a search to the map builder, so that you can build a searchable map for your website in minutes.   A great use for this new feature would be to add a “Dealer Locator” feature to your website.

The Google Maps module is now live for all Delaware.Net CMS/Ecommerce customers as a free, automatic upgrade.    These automatic feature upgrades come about once per month (or more frequently), and this is one of the major benefits of using our CMS over other open-source solutions.    Free upgrades, free support, free training, and better integration.

Training videos for the new Google Maps builder are being uploaded today, so you will be able to see training videos directly in our on-demand help system.

My Ingite Sussex Presenation on Social Networking

I had a great time presenting at the Ignite Sussex event at Dogfish Head Brew and Eats in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.   If you have never heard of Ignite, it is a new type of networking event where local artists, professionals, and technology-related folks give short, 5-minute presentations.  Giving one of these presentations is tough – you have 20 Powerpoint slides on auto-play, and only 5 minutes to present.  That is only 15 seconds per slide!   You have to talk fast, be passionate, and know your material.   Good Ignite presentations should be fun, and I did my best to keep mine entertaining.  Let me know what you think!

Please, Please, Please stop using Internet Explorer

In the web design world, web design professionals HATE HATE HATE Microsoft’s Internet Explorer web browser. Its the one topic that even feuding web designers agree on. Typically, our customers look at us funny when we suggest that they stop using Internet Explorer. It feels to me as though the customers think we are being tech snobs because we use web browsers that might have a few more toolbars and tools than Internet Explorer. Or they might think that we use the other browsers because they are open-source.

These are not the reasons we want you to stop using Internet Explorer!

Delaware.Net Office Remodel, and Our Cool New Desks

A few months ago, I became inspired to improve our office environment. My goals included:

  1. Open up the space – we knocked down three walls in the office, combining the tech and design areas.
  2. Bring in more natural light – knocking down the walls allowed more light in from the perimeter offices.
  3. Get rid of barriers between people – all office desk hutches were disassembled and removed.
  4. Improve lighting – replace flourecent lights with halogen spotlights and track lighting.
  5. Improve the colors of the walls – we had the office painted with a warmer color.
  6. Add more markerboards – we use markerboards a lot, so we got industrial markerboards from www.uwco.net.
  7. New flooring – I wanted to remove all carpet from the floors, but we settled for having the carpets professionally cleaned.
  8. Hang examples of our work – we created a wall of work examples that you pass as you walk into our office now.

After accomplishing all of these goals, I stepped back to admire our office space, and to see what else it needed to turn it into a true design studio. The thing that really jumped out at me is that we have collected quite an array of different computer desks over the years.  Some were 6 feet wide, some were 5 feet wide, and two were 4 feet wide.  All were made of that particle board that I hate.  So the next goal became:

  1. Get new desks.
